French Help.....The Imperfect tense?? Imparfait?

One of them happened for a short while, J'ai ete translates to I was mad for a very short period of time. But j'etais is for something that is more permanent, for example j'etais with angry would show that you were angry for days maybe weeks. Its hard to compare because english just has 1 past tense.
